English

has two objectives.

Learning English is more than just mastering grammar. It’s about recognising and using different types of language depending on the context, and about developing communication skills. At ICOPD, your individual needs and targets will be understood and supported by our experienced teachers who all have CELTA or equivalent qualifications. Our role is to give you the ability and confidence to reach the level of fluency you require. This could be for everyday use at work, for sharpening interview skills, for personal growth, or as preparation for English language tests such as IELTS, Trinity or OET, that may be needed for professional or educational purposes. You will be given regular, personalised feedback.

Your journey with us will begin by taking a diagnostic placement test that enables us to determine not just your current overall level, but, more importantly, which areas need the most attention: some students have good conversational skills but are poor at writing, some have good reading skills but inadequate oral comprehension, and so on. We provide ongoing informal assessment so you can measure your progress. This includes speaking and oral comprehension evaluation, role-plays, writing tasks, mini-projects, quizzes and mock tests.

Employability and Employment Skills

These courses are linked directly to employment, either by making it possible to access jobs in the first place or to improve skills in the workplace, possibly leading to higher paid work. Our courses have been chosen based on identified skills shortages in the West Midlands. They include: Functional Skills in English, Maths and IT at Entry Level 3 and Levels 1, 2 and 3; Personal Development and Employability at Entry Level 3 and Levels 1 and 2; Customer Services at Levels 1, 2 and 3;  Hospitality and Catering at Levels 1, 2 and 3; Retail Knowledge, Retail Skills and Retail Management at Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4;  Supply Chain Management and Warehousing and Storage Management at Levels 1, 2 and 3;  Early Years Education and Practice at Levels 2 and 3; Residential Childcare at Levels 2, 3 and 5;  Adult Social Care at Levels 2  and 3;  Security in the Private Security Industry at Levels 2 and 3; and Foundation Certificate in Artificial Intelligence.

The courses vary in duration but are all designed for practical application as quickly as possible.

OSCE Preparation

Our courses support those pursuing a range of Nursing and Midwifery pathways: Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Learning Disability Nursing, Children’s Nursing and Midwifery.

The courses cover Literacy and Numeracy Skills going beyond the CBT (Computer Based Test), Patient Safety Protocols, Field Specific Content, Maternity Care, Genomics,  End-of-life Care, Long-term and Life-limiting Conditions, Comorbidity  and Polypharmacy, Cardiac Monitoring, Chest Auscultation, Pathogenesis and Immunity, Ageing and Care of the Older Person, Recognising the Deteriorating Adult,  A and E Assessment, Social Stigma, Dementia Care, and Managing Transitions between Services and Multi-professional Teams.

The preparation takes account of all 10 OSCE ‘stations’: four devoted to assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation (APIE), four skills stations such as IM injection, and two written stations. We enable students to draw on their parallel clinical experience as pre-registration candidates working in health trust settings. Relevant equipment is provided.
